Dream Home is their Maine Thing
A Thirty-something couple builds their retirement home with plenty of time to spare

On a wow-inspiring lake set deep in the woods is the home of Miller and Megan van Vliet. It's a special place loaded with many of the perks and luxuries normally associated with someone shifting into a slower gear after years of hard work. But for this thirty-something couple, waiting until old age to build their dream home was not an option.

Miller and his entrepreneurial wife took a leap of faith and decided to go for it while they were still young. "I didn't have a lot of debt coming out of medical training, and since we don't have any kids yet, we decided not to wait until retirement to build our retirement home," Miller says. "We thought we'd get a jump on things and build it while we were in our early 30s."
